Topic St Remigius Church
The Parish Church of Long Clawson is dedicated to the 6th century Bishop of Rheims, St Remigius.
The origins of the church trace back to Norman times but it's main structual period lies in the 14th century. In 1890 the restoration required was so dramatic that the decision was taken to demolish the entire church and rebuild to a new design. However, due to the intervention of the Bishop of Peterborough, the Right Reverend Dr Creighton, the building was restored at the great cost of £3,000. For many years the tower housed 5 bells dating back to c.1350. 3 more have been added in recent years. A much worn effigy of one of the Bozon family, local Lords of the manor from 1304 to 1539, lies in the North aisle. Dr Swain was a generous benefactor, providing a new clock and chiming mechanism and at the time of the restoration he issued a challange that he would match £ for £ every £1 which villages gave. It came as quite a shock when he had to find £1,000. In 1848 a silver plated communion set, consisting of a cup, patten (cover), dish and flagon was presented to the church by Thomas Mitchell, Esq Patron, the vicar being his son, the Reverend Tho. Mitchell, MA. The church and parish as now part of the Vale of Belvoir Group comprising nine parishes in the team ministry.
